Notes
Comparing the finished and original art (avaliable here):
Wow! Look how many changes this Everett cover went through!
Did they think it didn’t have enough action?
Or did it start when they were looking to place their “Torpedoes Away!” blurb?
Changed or added:
The completely re-imagined boat, complete with hammer and sickle insignia and Chinese letters on the hull, is now launching a depth charge.
The submarine now exhibits much more damage towards the the tail section with more American soldiers escaping.
An airplane has been hit and is coming down in flames.
The silhouetted elbow of the knife-wielding-foreground-figure has been “enhanced”.
Everett’s signature has been moved.
(Perhaps Everett did some or all of the modifications himself. The added damage to the sub and the added below-surface-swimmers appear to be his work. The changed surface-water-effects including the foamy spray across the stern of the boat. The new boat and it’s inhabitants are consistent with his style, although I’m less certain.)
The new boat inhabitants appear to be Russian sailors. One even sporting a Stalin-esque mustache. Why then, the Chinese characters on the hull?
